The Stunning, Vibrant Bay of Hiriketiya

A horseshoe of golden sand on Sri Lanka's south coast, Hiriketiya pairs a friendly surf break with palm-shaded cafés and a village pace that's hard to leave.

The Stunning, Vibrant Bay of Hiriketiya

Tucked into the south coast near the fishing town of Dikwella, Hiriketiya is the kind of bay that makes people change their travel plans. A perfect horseshoe of golden sand is wrapped in coconut palms, its turquoise water sheltered by rocky headlands on either side. Arrive for a night, and you may well find yourself staying a week.

Once known only to a handful of surfers, the bay has blossomed into one of the island’s most charming beach escapes — without losing the village warmth that made it special in the first place.

A wave for everyone

The secret of Hiriketiya lies in its shape. On one side of the bay, a reef break peels off the point, drawing experienced surfers in the early morning glass. Closer to the beach, softer, rolling waves make it one of the most welcoming places on the coast to stand up on a board for the very first time.

Small surf schools line the sand, renting boards and offering patient lessons, while those who prefer to watch can settle beneath a palm with a fresh king coconut and enjoy the show.

By late afternoon the whole bay slows down — surfers drift in, the light turns honey-gold, and the village gathers to watch the sun slip behind the palms.

Slow days, golden evenings

Life here moves to the rhythm of the tide. Mornings begin with yoga on shaded decks or a swim in the calm inner bay; afternoons drift by in laid-back cafés serving everything from rice and curry to smoothie bowls. As evening falls, simple beachside kitchens light up with the day’s catch, grilled over coconut husks.

Beyond the bay

Hiriketiya makes a wonderful base for exploring the deep south. Nearby, the Hummanaya blowhole at Kudawella sends plumes of sea spray high into the air when the swell is up. In Dikwella, the Wewurukannala Vihara is home to one of the largest seated Buddha statues on the island, while the lighthouse at Dondra Head marks the very southern tip of Sri Lanka.

Further along the coast lie the wide, quiet beaches of Tangalle and the ancient rock temple of Mulkirigala, carved into a granite outcrop above the paddy fields.
